In this instance of English 101, we’ll explore the concept of literacy. New sociocultural definitions of literacy have extended the scope of the term and enabled us to think of competent performance in any number of realms as “being literate.” So, for example, we hear people as described as having financial literacy, relationship literacy, computer literacy, and so on.

During your time in this course, you’ll document literacy trends using both primary and secondary sources. You’ll also explain what it means to be literate in one community with which you are very familiar and investigate what it means to be literate in a community with which you’re less familiar but may wish to join.
